Courses

The CAC conducts a whole range of courses from ab-initio training for new recruits to other advanced courses required to provide Air Traffic Services within Malaysia. The DCA and the Malaysian Public Services Commission do recruitment of new controllers jointly; as controllers are government employees. These new recruits under go a fixed ab-initio training programme that leads to their appointment as air traffic controllers. Thereafter the ATS Division, based first on operational needs and then on career progression, plans training for controllers.

Once the training needs are identified, the CAC, the ATS Division and the ATCC’s plan the course schedule for a whole year. As most trainees are operational controllers, the operational needs must be looked it, especially whether the candidates can be released from active duty to attend courses. In recent years, the CAC has included in its curricula other related, but ‘Non-ATC’ based courses to meet the increasing demands for additional training to develop skills in other areas.

The programme leads to the obtaining of aerodrome/approach rating, which is a core requirement to graduate.

As employment opportunities for ATC’s in Malaysia are available only within the DCA, the programme is offered only when the DCA wishes to recruit new controllers. However, graduates from this programme are not assured of jobs at the DCA.
